Brent gives his people thanks

HE CHALKS up 40 years in local government next year but Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent is adamant his Order of Australia belongs to his community.

"I've recommended many people for awards over the years, never thinking about my own position but we've got so many valiant people in the community who have no reward for their work and I've always been proud to support them," Cr Brent said.

"This is really an award that belongs to the community, for the way in which they've responded to many challenges over the years.

"I've just been fortunate to be in the position I have for a long time."

He reached 20 years as mayor last year but said it was too soon to decide if he wanted to continue at next year's election.

"You do things with community support. I've not put myself forward on any other basis other than being encouraged to run in a leadership position, be it on a community body or organisation or council," he said.

"I am constantly trying to encourage people to represent your community in whatever way possible and there are many champions in regions like ours. They make my job easy.

"We're a long way away from election time and I always say if you've got good health, if your mind is clear and people want you to serve in a capacity, I'll respond to that but ultimately it's up to me and I haven't really applied any thought at all to where I am.

"But I will continue to properly serve the community until the day I die, whether that be as the president of the show society or at Blue Care or whatever.

"Everyone has a role to play in building communities and I've been fortunate to lead my community as their mayor."
