Breathe new life into phones

PHONES, we can't possibly live without them, but sometimes the cost of keeping in touch makes you long for the sound of silence.

There is one thing you can do, however, if you are willing, to keep both your cordless and mobile phone for longer, and that's change the battery rather than toss the phone.

According to Mackay Battery World's Gabe and Susan Giannangelo, most of us know we can change the battery in our mobile, but far fewer people are aware that a dodgy cordless phone will often work wonderfully with a new battery.

Mr Giannangelo said the company's online surveys showed as many as one in three of us throw the phone away thinking it is irreparable, when the problem was simply a tired battery.

"While eight out of 10 surveyed had a cordless phone, a quarter of those did not know it had a battery," Mr Giannangelo said.

"We believe this figure could be significantly higher since our survey was on our Battery World websites, which indicates these people are battery savvy anyway. In our focus groups many confessed while they knew the device had a battery that is where their understanding ended.

"Although they know their mobile phone battery can be replaced - it just didn't tweak with the cordless.

"So instead of buying a $25 replacement battery they are spending $80 or more on a new cordless phone."

While more people are aware that they can change the battery in their mobile phone, whether they will or not probably comes down to age.

Mrs Giannangelo said it costs about $44 for a mobile phone battery, but those who opt for a new battery are generally more mature.

"They're happy with the phone they've got so will replace the battery, but the young ones are just more technology-driven," she said. "They can't wait to get the latest and greatest, and a dead battery could be the excuse to move on."
