CANCELLED: Virus puts the brakes on Technology Challenge

HUMAN POWERED VEHICLES: The coronavirus has claimed another victim with the 2020 Fraser Coast Technology Challenge cancelled.

The Maryborough Chamber of Commerce made the decision to cancel the 18-year old event.

The Fraser Coast Technology Challenge which was scheduled for September 11-13, 2020 attracts more than 2000 primary and secondary school students from across the state competing in several categories of technology, innovation and imagination in a weekend of STEM inspired activities, competition and fun.

Chamber President Michelle Clunn said cancelling the 2020 Fraser Coast Technology Challenge had been a difficult decision and not a decision that was made lightly.

"However, with the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential risk to volunteers, participants and attendees, it was decided the best course of action was to cancel this year's event.

"We understand this will be very disappointing for many participants of the flagship RACQ HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) 24 hour Race, especially the year 12 students where this would have been their last year of competing and trust they understand the decision has been made to ensure continued public safety."

Event organisers will now focus on the planning and delivery of another successful Fraser Coast Technology Challenge in 2021.

The annual event is the blue ribband event in the recently formed eight race format of the Queensland HPV Super Series.

On Monday the organisers of the Super Series posted on their Facebook page that they are still planning to run some races and are not planning to cancel the whole year at this time.

The Chronicle will continue to provide up-to-date information on sporting cancellations or season commencement dates for the region's sports as the information is made available.
