Boys in blue will be forced to make do

IT SEEMS we have a choice when it comes to the size of our local police force.

If we want more police in uniform then they will be forced to undertake non police duties.

If we want less then they can concentrate on just doing what they should be doing.

Unfortunately, just like every business, the police have to make their budgets fit and if that means they have to make cuts then that's exactly what they must do.

Maybe it's the case that the government believes the best story to tell us is the number of police officers they have allocated to Ipswich, rather than exactly what they have now made them do.

The LNP Government has been carrying on about having to balance their budget since they came to power and I know that police commanders in all districts are under the strictest of instructions not to over-spend.

I remember sitting in front of one superintendent from another area listening to him complain about having no budget with which to operate.

He told me he'd had to cancel all overtime and that it was that bad he couldn't even order pens or pencils for his staff.

I don't believe anyone would say making up a quick breakfast tray for prisoners is a big deal, but all would say having to do a prisoner's laundry is a dirty joke.
