Boy in the Hood stripped and left in bare cell

Boy in the hood describes 'freezing all night'

THE boy in the hood, Dylan Voller, has spoken publicly for the first time about his experience in a Northern Territory youth detention centre.

The now 19-year-old fronted the Royal Commission into youth detention and child protection in the NT speaking about his time in the system

He described being placed in solitary confinement inside the ALice Spirngs Youth Detention Centre.

"It is just a tiny little cell with little air vent at the bottom of the ground but from the outside, the officers have glued cardboard to the outside so you can't see outside that air vent," he said.

"There was a window at the back but they've drilled concrete slabs intothat window so you can't see out the back windows. There is air con, on the outside of the door, they've drilled metal grates in so you can't look out the window, you can't see who is walking past, who is banging on your window, who is turning your light on and off.

There was a light that could only be turned on from the outside as well as CCTV. That'sall. There was no bed frames. Just you got a mattress on the floor. That's it."

Voller was then asked about being stripped naked and left in a cold cell.

"There was a time where they left me in there with no clothes, no mattress, no sheets, no nothing, for the period of the whole night," he said.

"From what I feel, they turned the air con on all night. I was freezing all night. I was pressing the button, actually crying asking for a blanket, asking for a sheet. I was that cold, my skin was going all wrinkly and shivering."

Voller went on to describe how guards would turn the light on in his cell so he couldn't sleep.

He also said he was often striped as a form of punishment for "swearing".

ABC reports the NT's solicitor-general Sonia Brownhill made a last minute attempt to prevent broadcast of Voler's testimony.
