Top song powered up at Woodford

THE most popular song of 2010 has been named and its writers said it was the Sunshine Coast that inspired it.

More than one million votes flowed into the annual triple j Hottest 100, with Aussie duo Angus and Julia Stone’s song Big Jet Plane winning top honours.

Their gentle hit, which is laced with violins and sung almost as a lullaby, came to writer Angus Stone as he tried to escape the blistering heat at Woodford Folk Festival.

After his win, announcers on the radio station asked him about penning the popular ditty.

“One day I was at Woodford and it was melting hot and I went down to Stony Creek and I met a girl there and she was a goddess sparkling in the sun,” he said.

“We kind of had a thing and had a bit of love, then I had to split and go on tour and I didn’t see her again and I wanted to take her with me but I couldn’t, so I wrote a song about it.”

Woodford Folk Festival organiser Bill Hauritz joked it was the woman, not the festival, that was to blame.

“It’s lovely that he gave us a mention,” Mr Hauritz said.

“We love these guys.

“They have performed a few times in the festival.

“I’m full of admiration of how they have gotten on with their career.

“They have been very supportive of us over the years and we’re always grateful for that.”

Melbourne band Little Red came in second with Rock It.

Coming in third was Ou Est Le Swimming Pool with Dance the Way I Feel – an homage to Charlie Haddon, who plunged to his death in 2010.

Rounding out the top five was Birds of Tokyo with Plans and Boy and Bear’s cover of Crowded House’s Fall at your Feet.

The Hottest 100 is one of the largest public music polls in the world.
