Trend of bike theft rolls through Noosa post triathlon

A TREND of bike theft has rolled through Noosa since the region's triathlon was held at the beginning of the month.

There have been 13 pushbikes reported stolen since November 1, ranging from triathlon and mountain bikes valued up to $3500 to children's bikes valued about $350.

Noosa Heads Police shift supervisor Sergeant Roger Marek said there had been an unusually high number of pushbike thefts, mostly targeted at tourist accommodation or businesses.

Of the 13 stolen, nine have since been recovered.

Sgt Marek said a 26-year-old Tewantin man had been charged after a triathlon racing bike stolen from Noosaville on November 1 was allegedly found on the roof of a Goodchap St property last Sunday.

Police have also charged three teenagers over the theft of four hire pushbikes from a Gympie Terrace business on November 6.

Other thefts have included a $2500 mountain bike being taken from the back of a car at Noosa Hospital on November 6, two separate thefts of mountain bikes from a Noosaville resort last week and a racing road bike and mountain bike stolen from a Noosaville resort on November 1.

Sgt Marek urged people to be wary of thieves targeting holiday accommodation.

"The message here is even when you are on holidays you need to sec

ure the bikes," Sgt Marek said.

"It is clear that holiday apartments have been targeted possibly due to a lack of security measure for the bikes."
