Bi-partisan support for greyhound racing inquiry

SHADOW Racing Minister Jann Stuckey has welcomed the Labor Government decision to elevate the greyhound racing review to a Commission of Inquiry.

"The LNP supports any action to end the abhorrent practice of live baiting exposed within the greyhound racing industry," Ms Stuckey said.

"Some may well question if the Racing Minister acted swiftly and strongly enough when these practices were first raised."

"Queenslanders have been sickened by what they have seen and are demanding changes".

The Minister for Sport and Racing Bill Byrne ordered the Commission of Inquiry under Alan MacSporran QC after receiving the interim review report on Friday.

Mr Byrne said serious allegations had prompted the Government to step up its examination of the Queensland greyhound racing industry.

"The Commissioner has the power to summon a witness to give evidence or produce documents," Mr Byrne said.

"The purpose of the Inquiry is to determine how the misconduct of live-baiting was able to occur without earlier detection and how widespread these practices are."

The establishment of the Commission of Inquiry comes after a further four arrests by the joint Queensland Police/RSCPA Taskforce established in the wake of allegations on the Four Corners program in February.

Fourteen people have been arrested on 53 charges, including 37 of serious animal cruelty.

Racing Queensland has warned off six trainers for life and suspended 27 trainers from the industry.

The Commissioner is due to deliver his final report by June 1.
