Berry to serve as a deputy speaker

MEMBER for Ipswich Ian Berry was one of several LNP MPs asked to fill the role of temporary speaker, following the naming of Fiona Simpson as Queensland's first female speaker yesterday.

Mr Berry said he would join the roster of deputy speakers that would take on the job when Ms Simpson was not available.

He said he was already making sure he was ready to fulfil the role when necessary.

"I've got the books here now and I'm reading them,' he said.

The LNP government nominated long-serving Maroochydore MP Ms Simpson to the speakership during the first sitting of the new Queensland Parliament yesterday.

The chamber includes 78 LNP members, seven Labor members, two Katter's Australian Party MPs and two independents.

Ms Simpson vowed to put partisan interests aside in the Speaker's role but still represent the people of her electorate.
