Bellbird Park mum injured in stolen car crash

A BELLBIRD Park mum spent a week in hospital after she was involved in a serious crash while travelling in a stolen car.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, Sahara Jane Wade pleaded guilty to an unlawful use of a motor vehicle charge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Jo Colston said the crash took place in Deception Bay on March 21 last year at 11.10pm - about five hours after the vehicle had been reported as stolen.

Wade, 25, was taken to hospital where she spent more than a week being treated for serious injuries.

Defence lawyer Vince Knox said there was nothing in the police report to suggest Wade was the one who had stolen the vehicle.

However his client had become aware the car was stolen and had remained tight-lipped in naming who was responsible for the theft.

In addition to the offence, Wade also faced additional charges of for contravening the direction or requirement of a police and possessing explosives for unrelated incidents.

Magistrate Barry Cosgrove said personal and general deterrence was an important factor in sentencing Wade.

"As a result of the unlawful use of a motor vehicle offence you were injured," Mr Cosgrove told Wade.

"You've paid a consequence but that won't be the only consequence."

Wade was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months.
