How to get bedded bliss

IT MAKES sense to invest money and creativity into transforming your bed into a refuge. After all, we spend a third of our life tucked in our beds.

A few basic terms which make up the various elements of a contemporary bed include bedspreads, comforters and duvets (doonas in Australia) which are designed to sit on top of the bed.

A bedspread covers the entire bed and hangs low enough to reach down to the floor. A bedspread is essentially a decorative item, and is often made in delicate, not-so-easy to clean fabrics.

A comforter or duvet on the other hand is a practical item, designed for the function of adding warmth.

A comforter/duvet/doona is usually smaller and requires a valance to cover the box spring area of your bed.

Both come in specific sizes for single, double, queen, or king size beds, but sizes between each of these categories differ.

Then the sheets. Again, these are in the various sizes.

There are a few trends happening here. People like to count threads, essentially the higher the thread count, the finer and silkier the sheets feel.

Organic bed linen is gaining in popularity as people like the idea of sleeping between fabric that hasn't been grown with the use of harsh chemicals and pesticides.

Bamboo fabric is also gaining in popularity, known as the fabric of the future, there's a lot of benefits to using bamboo bedding as the feel is ultra soft, the durability is great and they are generally reasonably priced.

In terms of styles, there's a lot of retro going on; from paisley duvets, hand knitted blankets and a lot of vintage inspired prints and styles.

Fabric bed heads are also gaining in popularity - a real throw back, but they do provide a princess feel to a bed.
