Beattie’s cardboard cut-out is 'Courier Mail bastardry'
FORMER Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has slammed Brisbane media reports that criticised him for leaving his Federal electorate of Forde to campaign in Mackay and Townsville.
"Anybody would think Mackay and Townsville are on Mars," he told the Daily Mercury while in Mackay yesterday.
"The last time I looked Mackay wasn't on Mars. If you're (going for) a Federal seat for Queensland then you've got to be mindful of the rest of the state."
It was reported by the Courier Mail that Mr Beattie was "too busy for Beenleigh", so his electorate had to make do with a cardboard cut-out of him. However, Mr Beattie said he was out of his electorate for less than two days.
He said 25 nurses and health workers had been taken out of the Mackay district under the LNP State Government and he was concerned what Federal Opposition Tony Abbott would do on a national level.
He said when the LNP was first elected in March 2012, the waiting time for category three elective surgery at Mackay Base Hospital was 76 days. About 18 months later, he said, it was now 250 days.
"If you haven't got the nurses then frankly you can't do the surgery. While that's still early for an 18-month period, you can still see where the trend is going. You are going to wait longer."
Mr Beattie's return to politics for this Federal election all started with a phone call from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
Mr Beattie, who openly admitted he didn't agree with every decision the Anna Bligh Government made, said he wasn't happy with what had been happening in Queensland recently.
"You need strong voices. There are too many people in politics who are wimps and are there for the money. I'm at the point in my life where I really want to make a difference."

Do you think it is necessary for Peter Beattie to be campaigning all over Qld?
This poll ended on 23 August 2013.
Why not? He is trying to win votes
His seat of Forde should take priority
I don't care what he does as long as he stays away from me
