Obama rings Rudd to congratulate him on comeback

UNITED States President Barack Obama has phoned Kevin Rudd to congratulate him on his return to the prime ministership.

But the world's most powerful man also took some time out of his busy schedule to thank Julia Gillard for her "warm friendship".

Mr Obama made the calls from Air Force One during his trip to Africa, the White House revealed in a statement.

During his talk with Mr Rudd the US leader highlighted the strength of the relationship between the two countries and the importance of it continuing.

"In his call with Prime Minister Rudd, the president congratulated the prime minister on his return to office," the statement read.

"The president also reiterated the enduring strength of the U.S.-Australia alliance and his confidence that the United States and Australia will continue to work together closely on important global and regional issues."

Mr Rudd later posted a photo on social media site Instagram of him on the phone to Mr Obama.

The statement also revealed details of the president's conversation with Ms Gillard.

"In his call with former prime minister Gillard, President Obama thanked her for her warm friendship and close partnership in deepening cooperation between the United States and Australia, and he wished her well in her future endeavours," it read.

The rapport between the former prime minister and Mr Obama was well-documented.

The call comes amid revelations Mr Rudd spent almost $30,000 on phone calls in the past six months.
