Bali Nine mum: 'we don't want our son to go before us'

THE mother of one of the Bali Nine heroin smugglers who is set to be executed this month pleaded for her son's life ahead of her visit to Indonesia this week.

Helen Chan, Andrew Chan's mother, told ABC's Four Corners she would beg for her son's life.

Chan is on death row and awaits execution in coming weeks. Chan and fellow drugs smuggler Myuran Sukumaran have used every legal avenue in Indonesia to prevent the death penalty being handed down for their roles in the drug ring.

Despite Indonesian President Joko Widodo's refusal to grant clemency in either case, Ms Chan told the ABC she and her husband were "old and in poor health" and "would not like to see our son go before us".

She also asked Mr Widodo to have pity on the couple, despite previous pleas for clemency failing.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she was making daily appeals to Indonesia for clemency in Chan's and Sukumaran's cases.

An execution date has not been set.
