Bali Nine drug mule tells of bizarre love story

ADVERTISED as "the strangest love story you'll ever see", Bali Nine drug smuggler Scott Rush has found love while behind bars of a Balinese prison, telling his story to 60 Minutes in an interview filmed in secret.

Rush, 28, is purportedly engaged to British mother-of-two Nikki Butler, 38 -- a "wealthy finance worker" who met Rush shortly before his arrest.

Rush is now serving life in prison as one of the Bali Nine, caught in April 17, 2005 for his part in attempting to smuggle 8.3kg of heroin out of Indonesia.

Journalist Tara Brown asked the future Mrs Rush of her fiance's appeal.

"I don't' want to be with anyone else. He's the only one I want to be with. He's just perfect to me," she said.

And why would Rush think it was reasonable to be engaged to someone living on the other side of the world while he remains locked in a cage?

"Because I'm in love with her. She's just perfect. She's pretty and smart and she looks after me in here," he said.

"And out of all the trouble she's been given, she still comes back."

At points, Rush appeared vague and confused, with Ms Brown explaining he is currently taking methadone and sedatives as part of his rehabilitation.

He said he had not taken any the morning of the interview, then asked, "Why, do I look like I have?".

The report drew criticism on the show's Facebook page with some questioning the amount of air time given to a convicted drug smugger.

Have you nothing better to run than this tripe. I am sick of the media giving convicted criminals air time. There are far more things to do stories on than idiots cavorting with criminals.

Kylie Shehata 60 minutes clearly you could see he was on drugs throughout the duration of the interview. Why even bother interviewing him if he wasn't straight? Did you expect your viewers to take him and the story seriously given that?

Karen Moss Bizarre it is. Scott really looked like he was on another planet. Best of luck to them. They are going to need it I think.

Others were willing to give this apparently blossoming love story a little more of a chance:

Alana Lanigan She's clearly an intelligent, down to earth woman. She loves him, he loves her. So good for them.

Susan Park Good luck to them completely ...I think he is a gorgeous guy that made a bloody terrible mistake basically ..... Looks to me that she really loves him
