Woman gets bail on 88 charges of rape, cruelty to children

A WOMAN facing 88 charges of rape, cruelty to children, indecent treatment, assault and torture appeared in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court via video yesterday morning.

An application for bail was made on behalf of the former mining truck operator, who has been in custody in Townsville for the past few months.

This was opposed by police.

A Rockhampton Child Protection and Investigation Unit officer said the charges related to family members.

He said the alleged offending spanned across Queensland over a 10-year period, starting in 1993.

Magistrate Cameron Press granted bail on the strict condition the woman not come within 200km of Rockhampton. As his decision was relayed to the court, the woman broke down into tears.

The matter has been committed to the higher courts.
