Autumn is here but in name only

THE first day of autumn will not bring respite from the heat, with Ipswich to experience mid-summer temperatures and humidity today.

Following yesterday’s sweltering maximum of 34 degrees, the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast an even hotter introduction to March.

It will reach 36 degrees before showers and storms roll in toward the afternoon.

The remainder of the week will remain hot and muggy, with showers, possible storms and temperatures in excess of 30 degrees forecast.

Cloud cover will mean the nights will also remain hot, with minimum temperatures stuck in the low 20s until Saturday.

The daytime temperature will drop just below 30 degrees on Saturday, with some heavier rain and slightly cooler weather predicted for Sunday.

The bureau has warned the UV Index will remain in the extreme category this week.
