Australian champ wins for late dad
FIVE-time Australian powerlifting champion Thomas Bermingham has dedicated the Australian title he earned at the weekend to his late father, Gympie's Brasso Bermingham.
A former Gympie local, Thomas Bermingham earned the title at the Global Powerlifting Committee Australia 2012 National Powerlifting Titles where he lifted 140kg to win the 67.5kg Australian Open Men's Bench-press title.
The titles were held at Caloundra RSL on June 23 and 24 and hosted Australia's best male and female powerlifters and bench pressers.
Lifting over twice his bodyweight, Bermingham also picked up an Australian record for his weight division with the 140kg lift and claimed second place for the Open Best Overall bodyweight to weight ratio.
Bermingham said his win was in the name of his father, long-time Gympie Rugby League patron Brasso who died in September last year. Bermingham said his dad had been an important support to him during his powerlifting career.
"I dedicate my win to my Dad.
"He was always a mentor and good support for me," Bermingham said.
Bermingham said strength ran in his family and he kept lifting and training because he simply enjoyed it. When it came to competition he said he enjoyed showcasing his strength.
"I love the fun of it," Bermingham said.
Bermingham, a qualified tradesman, now lives in Brisbane where he has developed a close working relationship and friendship with his sponsors Richard Gavan and Gary Vella of Power Supplements and Protein-n-More.
"They've been backing me all the way over the past year," Bermingham said.
The trio work together to further Bermingham's career, which he said was done by targeting specific goals - currently he aims to win every competition he enters.
Because he's already Australia's all-round strongest pound-for-pound competitor, Bermingham has had to change his competition tactic from trying to beat the best to trying to beat his own records and dominate all in federations before considering an international career.
Next, he will compete in October 20 National Big Bench in Paradise competition in Brisbane.
