'Angel of Australia' sparkles as lead singer at Civic

IPSWICH seniors were treated to a Christmas concert to remember yesterday when international singing sensation Mirusia performed for a packed Civic Centre auditorium.

Lyric soprano Mirusia, described by André Rieu as the Angel of Australia, performed two shows at the Ipswich City Council event.

Mirusia has toured with Rieu and her rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria has had more than 10 million hits on YouTube.

In addition to Mirusia's performance, Christmas carols were also performed by local seniors and the Alchemy Street Choir during the pre-show entertainment.

Pam Schubel performed with the seniors carol singers.

Ms Schubel, a soprano, has been singing since she was five and says all the seniors "really love" getting involved.

She was part of a group with upwards of 15 members.

"I've been with the seniors group since they started, which is a good few years ago," she said.

Ms Schubel said Mirusia was an outstanding performer.

"She has a lovely personality and a lovely voice as well, and she knows how to interact with an audience."

Cr Andrew Antoniolli was the MC for the event and said Mirusia had an interesting Ipswich connection.

She is a family friend of John Scholte, a former Ipswich baker.

Mr Scholte helped fund Mirusia's sample CD that was sent to Rieu.
