BRITNEY Spears had a bad week in her professional and private life and Ellen DeGeneres confirmed her status as the next Oprah.

The Golden Globes were a big hit and honoured those in the entertainment industry who missed out on Academy Award nominations.

Oscar nominations announced, Golden Globe Awards held

Australian actor Hugh Jackman scored his first Oscar nomination for the lead role in Les Miserables.

After winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor last week, his Academy Award chances are looking good.

Ben Affleck was snubbed by the Oscars in the Best Director category.

But the Golden Globes honoured the Argo director and gave him the recognition he deserved.

Leonardo DiCaprio was also ignored by the Academy for his supporting role in Django Unchained.

Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for Zero Dark Thirty at the Golden Globes, but the film's director Kathryn Bigelow did not even get nominated for an Oscar.

These award shows are prestigious in the entertainment industry, but what matters more than winning awards is being respected by your peers and fans.

Ellen DeGeneres coming to Australia

Ellen DeGeneres announced on her daytime talk show that she is visiting Australia for the first time in March and is bringing her wife, Australian actress Portia De Rossi.

Ellen's birthday is on Australia Day and as a gift to her 400-member audience, she gave them all a Qantas airline ticket each for travel to Sydney or Melbourne.

Ellen's trip is funded and co-sponsored by Swisse Wellness and Qantas Airways.

Global ambassador of Swisse Nicole Kidman made the announcement with Ellen to coincide with the official world-wide launch of the Australian vitamin company.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show, with a global audience of 16 million, will shoot numerous segments in Melbourne and Sydney.

Australian taxpayers contributed more than $5 million to host Oprah Winfrey and 300 of her fans on a promotional tour in 2010.

But unlike Oprah, Ellen should be worth the investment and provide a boost to Australian tourism.

Britney Spears and fiancé break-up announcement comes hours after X Factor exit

Rumours that The X Factor producers were not going to renew Britney Spears's contract were buzzing in late December.

But last week, Britney quit her role as a judge on the US reality TV competition.

Her professional life is not the only thing that is in disarray.

The pop star and her former agent Jason Trawick called off their 13-month engagement.

Both announcements came within hours of each other.

Britney claims she left X Factor to focus on her music career.

But a source said that fellow X Factor judge Simon Cowell was disappointed with Britney's behaviour, claiming "he wanted crazy Britney, but he got boring Britney".

Her star power didn't help boost ratings and she demanded too much money.
