Super puppy needs a name

SETTLERS Rockhampton Retirement Village will become home to Assistance Dogs Australia's newest super puppy next Thursday - but first, he needs a name.

Settlers and Assistance Dogs Australia are holding a competition to name the adorable eight-week-old golden retriever, giving $1000 away for the best suggestion.

The puppy will live in the village with manager Ian Thompson for 12 months while he is trained to perform everyday tasks for someone with a physical disability.

He will be the first assistance dog to be trained in a retirement village in Australia, learning tasks such as picking up dropped items, getting the phone and even unloading the washing machine.

"We're very excited and proud to host him in the village," Ian said.

The puppy will be trained by Assistance Dogs Australia and Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club volunteers.

Ian said residents would be seeing a lot of the pup around town as he is prepared for all sorts of scenarios.

"We'll be taking him everywhere, from a Capras game to Stocklands," he said.

Settlers resident Evelyn Paterson said she was excited for the puppy to arrive.

"I've been thinking of names all weekend," she said.

Suggestions for the pup's name can be sent to names@assistancedogs.org.au.

The puppy's name will be announced when he arrives on April 19 at a ceremony to be held at Settlers.
