Are meals made from scratch now a thing of the past?

A HOME-COOKED meal made from scratch is quickly becoming a relic of the past, according to research released by Westinghouse.

The Kids In The Kitchen survey found about one in four modern parents always cook from scratch, compared to more than half of parents from the previous generation.

Westinghouse surveyed more than 1000 parents for the survey and found, unsurprisingly, electronic devices had a big influence on kids' role in the kitchen.

"More than one in three parents (35%) allow their children to bring a device to the dinner table. Almost 4 in 10 of these parents (39%) are letting their children bring a device to the dinner table most nights of the week," the survey said.

About one third of parents spent time each month teaching their children how to cook, but about 30% don't spend time teaching cooking skills at all.

Chef Julie Goodwin has teamed up with Westinghouse to release a recipe booklet to coincide with the survey.
She said in a statement cooking was a life skill worth passing down.

"It helps set them up for life for their nutrition and wellbeing as well as proving a wonderful time for the family to spend together."
