'Tis season for displays

IF you happened to be walking through any major department store at the weekend and thought your life had skipped ahead a few months, you are not alone.

Christmas stock, including trees and teddy bears, was on display at some stores.

Queensland Retail Traders and Shopkeepers Association executive director Ian Baldock was flabbergasted when he heard.

"I've been in retail all my life and there is no way we would put Christmas stock out already," Mr Baldock said.

"But today the retail industry is so competitive and Christmas retail is seasonal."

While Mr Baldock did not think retailers would sell much stock this soon, Christmas products were prone to work on the "recall" system of selling.

"This is when the consumer will think, 'Oh, I need Christmas cards and wrapping paper' and they'll go back and buy it from the first place they saw it," Mr Baldock said.

He said there may be a backlash from consumers who were annoyed by the stock already being out.
