Friend chips in to help sick classmate

SINCE Saturday, friends Michelle Reuben and Nicole Reggett have become a little better known in their school community.

The St Mary's College pupils featured in Saturday's The Queensland Times where Michelle's battle with spinal cancer and Nicole's efforts to assist were highlighted.

Nicole has been fundraising for several weeks to buy Michelle a laptop to be used while she undergoes treatment.

On Monday night, the community gathered to play bingo and support the girls' cause, raising more than $400.

After seeing the story in Saturday's paper an Ipswich resident gave an extra $1000 which has helped purchase the laptop in full.

Michelle said about 30 people attended Monday's event which was humbling for the year 10 student.

She said the community's support was overwhelming and she was thankful to Nicole and her family for their help.

"There were many people that I didn't even know there (bingo night)," Nicole said.

"Also the other day this girl, who I didn't know, just came up and gave me a big hug."
