Accident causes motorway gridlock
By KATELYN AMBREY THE Ipswich Motorway's outbound lanes were blocked for more than an hour at Wacol yesterday after a spectacular collision caused a truck to jackknife.
Taringa resident Dougal Gillman said he was driving behind the truck in the right-hand lane about 1.20pm when a white Camry attempted to overtake the truck from the inside lane.
"She tried to get in front of the truck but clipped it with the back of her car," Mr Gillman said.
"The truck locked up its brakes.
"The Camry hit the crash barrier on the left-hand side of the road," Mr Gillman said.
Mr Gillman said the crash, which happened across from the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, caused a huge traffic jam.
"You should see the wreckage strewn over the highway," he told the QT at the scene yesterday.
"I am glad I just had lunch because I'm not going to see my dinner for a while."
No injuries were reported to the police.
But Mr Gillman said he hoped people would think twice about overtaking from the inside lane in the future.
"The young person was not only tailgating but obviously made a bad decision to cut in front of the truck when they had no where near the room," he said.
The motorway reopened at 3.10pm.
