Late strike denies Knights a "deserved" point

AN 80th minute winner denied the Ipswich Knights at least a "deserved'' point in their latest Brisbane Premier League match.

However, coach Stewart Drinkeld was encouraged by his team's commitment against Logan on their home field.

"We performed well. Just had a bit of a lapse in concentration probably cost us in the end,'' Drinkeld said.

"I thought we deserved something out of the game.''

Drinkeld said conceding one goal to the well-organised and coached Logan outfit showed his side was progressing well.

"I tell you what, we're not far behind them at the moment and we've got a bit of improvement to do,'' he said.

"Everyone did really well. It was just a little bit unfortunate we weren't as clinical in front of goal as they were.''

In Capital League 2 matches last night, Western Spirit and Ipswich City secured their first wins of the season.

Western Spirit beat Slacks Creek 1-0 with the Bulls accounting for Redcliffe 3-1 - both away from home.

After rating his team "well below par'' in their opening 3-0 loss to The Gap, Spirit head coach Nick Paterson was a happier man at the weekend.

He was pleased with a new-look backline, including right back Corey Dunne who scored the only goal from a free kick early in the second half.

"It was very positive,'' Paterson said. "The boys went really well.''

The Bulls capitalised on a productive first half to complete the job at Redcliffe.

Michael Loomes, Andreas Heider and Zygan Condie scored.

Club stalwart Condie was heartened by the performance, with the Bulls having some key players out and being slow starters in previous seasons.

New Bulls coach Norbert Duga is due back this week.
