Alleged bashing got ‘a bit out of hand’ jury hears

A BUNDABERG man accused of murdering a man on the Gold Coast allegedly told his neighbour that he had "bashed someone" and that it had "gotten a bit out of hand", a jury has been told.

Bundaberg man Shane Anthony Eric Hansen and Dean Mark Wills are accused of murdering Darren Britza.

Mr Britza was allegedly brutally bashed and stabbed at a drug dealer's industrial shed on the Gold Coast in 2001.

Mr Hansen and Mr Wills have pleaded not guilty to the murder and are on trial at Brisbane Supreme Court.

On Friday Mr Hansen's former neighbour gave evidence saying he was at a party on a Friday afternoon and evening when Mr Hansen and Mr Wills left.

He also told the court Mr Hansen returned sometime later and was in an agitated state.

In the days following the party, he said Mr Hansen briefly told him what had happened after he and Mr Wills had left that night.

"… He said him and Dean had bashed someone and it had gotten a bit out of hand," the neighbour told the court.

"That's sort of the nuts and bolts of it (and) we talked about something else."

Under cross-examination, the former neighbour said he gave his first statement to police in November 2011; about 10 years after the alleged murder.

He said before giving his statement, police had told him what other witnesses had said.

He was asked under cross-examination whether he was unsure of what was his actual recollection of what happened and what was regurgitated things he'd heard from police.

"Certain parts, yes," he replied.

The trial will continue on Monday. - ARM NEWSDESK
