AFP takes over Parliament security amid terror threats

UPDATE: SECURITY measures at Parliament House in Canberra are being ramped up, with armed federal police to join the House security staff, as fears grow of a potential attack on the Prime Minister's office.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Friday morning confirmed on national television that Parliament House remained a potential target, while "chatter" among terrorist networks had confirmed government buildings nation-wide were also potential targets.

Mr Abbott told Channel Seven that a review of security measures "about a week ago" at the home of federal democracy was already leading to federal police taking over from existing private security contractors and government officers.

While no specific plot to attack the House or other government buildings in Australia has yet been uncovered, Mr Abbott said intelligence agency reports about the "chatter" indicated such threats were being considered by some groups in Australia.

The change will see federal police, which also run the Australian Capital Territory's police force, put in charge of internal and external security at Parliament House.

Aside from ministerial offices, more than a thousand staff work at Parliament House, among them, caterers, cleaners, guides, maintenance, committee and departmental staff.

Mr Abbott told Channel Nine this morning that while the "whole country remains at risk", the best thing people could do was to "go about their business".
