ACTU: Five unemployed for every job ad

THERE could be more than five jobless Australians for every advertised job vacancy in the country, a union peak body claims.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions' submission to the Federal Budget made the claim, comparing job ads to unemployment levels.

ACTU president Ged Kearney said the comparison showed there were more than 750,000 Australians "ready and able to start work", despite only 149,900 jobs advertised as vacant in November last year.

The submission comes as the Reserve Bank fears the 6.2% unemployment rate will continue rising this year.

Unions urged the government not to cut any public service jobs and invest more in skills and vocational education. The government has already proposed more investment in vocational education, with changes currently blocked in the Senate.
