A long way to London

IT'S a long way from Moranbah to London, but gymnast Larrissa Miller has made it.

The 19-year-old, who started gymnastics at Moranbah at the age of five, has been named in the Australian women's team for London.

A veteran of three world championships from 2009-11, Miller is training with the Australian team at the AIS in Canberra for four weeks before heading off to her first Olympics.

"The Australian team finished sixth at the last Olympics. We'd be aiming to maintain or better that," she said.

"A medal, that would be amazing.

"I'm just aiming to make it into the finals on the bars and floor. A top-eight finish would be amazing."

Miller started gymnastics at Moranbah when she tagged along with her older sister Nicole.

"I remember that it was just like a big shed. It didn't really have a lot in it," she said.

"It was not like an elite facility. It was just basic.

"I trained at Mackay a few times when I was doing gym at Moranbah. A group of four or five of us went there.

"I got asked to train at Brisbane by a judge who was at Mackay."

Miller moved to Brisbane at the age of eight, when she took up a place in the Academy of Sport.

She has already competed in the London Olympic arena, in the 2009 worlds, when she made the bars final.

While the Olympics will be pressure-filled, Miller said she was ready for it.

"Our selection process involved two Olympic trials and a national championships," she said.

"With experience you learn how to handle that side of the competition."
