Vixens smash West Coast to end their losing-streak

THE Melbourne Vixens ended a two-game losing streak in style after hammering West Coast Fever 69-39 yesterday to finish second on the Trans-Tasman Championship table.

The Vixens will play the Thunderbirds in next weekend's major semi-final.

Karyn Howarth bagged 41 goals from 47 attempts for the Vixens, while Tegan Caldwell (16/18), and Sharelle McMahon (12/19) also got on the scoresheet.

Catherine Cox finished with 17 from 20 for the Perth-based Fever who finished the season in seventh place.

The Vixens' big win meant they leap-frogged the Queensland Firebirds, who dropped to third after losing to the Thunderbirds 54-52 in Adelaide. Carla Borrego led the way with 33 from 35 for the Thunderbirds, while Romelda Aiken bagged 44 from 49 for the Queenslanders.

The Firebirds face the prospect of dropping to fourth, depending on tonight's match between WBOP Magic and bottom-placed Northern Mystics.

The Magic go into the game in fourth place, and 3.2% behind the Queenslanders, but could jump to third and host the Firebirds next week with a big win.
