Turkish President blames US cleric for failed coup attempt
TURKISH President Tayyip Erdogan continues to strengthen his grip on the country after last week's failed military coup, which he blames on US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen.
Using his state of emergency powers, the President has authorised the closure of about 1000 schools, 1200 charities and foundations, 20 trade unions, 15 universities and 35 medical institutions, citing suspected links to the Gulen movement, state news agency Anadolu reported.
The action follows the detention or suspension of more than 58,000 soldiers, police, judges and government workers.
