Thurston primed and ready for Origin II

POWERHOUSE prop Matt Scott says star halfback Johnathan Thurston is primed Orign II after being "a bit off" in the Maroons' 14-6 first-game loss to New South Wales in Sydney.

Thurston battled injury and illness around the opener and was clearly not at his destructive best.

But Scott, who is a teammate of Thurston's at the North Queensland Cowboys, said the 30-year-old veteran of 25 Origin matches was poised for a much better showing at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

"No doubt he was probably a bit off with his groin injury and sickness in the last one but I think I saw a bit of a spark back in him against the Dragons (a 22-16 win to the Cowboys on June 14) so hopefully that's a good sign of things to come," he said.

"And around camp and at training he's certainly been very energetic and very enthusiastic."

Scott believed Thurston was more at ease after the birth of daughter Frankie, following game one.

"I suppose he's a lot more settled," Scott said.

"Samantha has had the baby now and I suppose he's not as anxious about those off-field things. Hopefully he's concentrating on his footy and he'll put in a good performance."

Meanwhile, Scott wasn't concerned at being the only recognised front-rower in Queensland's side for game two.

He expected some of his fellow forwards to give the team plenty of go-forward.

"It's a little bit funny not having a few more traditional front rowers around," he said.

"There's always been few in the squad so it's a little bit different."

"But (second-rower turned prop) Nate Myles has been in the side for a long time and I'm very comfortable playing next to him and (second-rower) Sam Thaiday might push up front there for a bit also."
