Suncorp offers top tips to 'play it safe' this storm season

THE second verse of Dorothea Mackellar's poem, My Country, is something that we learnt by heart as young school children and the generation of tomorrow are also learning to recite the words.

They are a poignant reminder to all that we live in a country that can offer us heartbreak one day and joy the next.

In the past few years, especially in Queensland and Northern NSW, we have experienced devastation and tragedy.

The 2010/2011 floods in Queensland alone claimed 38 lives and affected more than 200,000 people across 70 towns. Three-quarters of the state was declared a disaster zone and, as a result, there was an estimated cost to the state of $2.4billion.

As catastrophic as this was, this is only one natural disaster that has occurred in recent years.

The sub-tropical climate we enjoy so much also brings with it the chance of severe weather events, and a variety of natural disasters and hazards are unfortunately common.

Severe thunderstorms have already struck our towns, pelting down hailstones as large as tennis balls.

From fires, to floods, cyclones and storms we can't take our safety as something that is guaranteed.

We all know from experience, disasters can occur anywhere and at any time.

Although we can't stop such events, people can be well prepared.

Hopefully this special publication, brought to you by Suncorp and containing emergency readiness information from the NSW and Queensland Governments, can help you do just that.

The best advice is to be alert and ready.
