Pro-boxer Hooper will fight cabbie assault charge

PROFESSIONAL boxer Damien Duncan Hooper has fronted Toowoomba Magistrates Court after allegedly hitting a taxi driver during a dispute in South Toowoomba.

Police allege the 21-year-old and his 23-year-old associate Joshua James Weribone were involved in a dispute with a taxi driver at the intersection of James and Neil Sts on December 14, last year.

In documents presented to the court, police allege Hooper had a verbal argument with the driver, who was trying to remove Hooper from the taxi about 7.45pm.

It will be alleged the former Olympian struck the taxi driver in the side of the head with an open hand and also struck out with his feet. The alleged strikes caused the taxi driver to fall to the ground.

Those allegations are the subject of a serious assault of a person aged 60 years or over charge against Hooper.

Police will also allege he behaved in an offensive manner and used obscene language and struggled with officers when arrested.

Those allegations are the basis of obstruct police and public nuisance charges against Hooper and Weribone.

Defence solicitor Dan Habermann appeared on behalf of both men when their cases were mentioned separately yesterday.

He said Hooper would contest the serious assault charge.

Hooper's matters were adjourned until March 17.

Meanwhile, Weribone's appearance was excused when his matters were adjourned until February 6.
