Heartbreak for survivor of crash that killed two teens

WHEN Jason McLean heard the police had rung his wife Beth, his first reaction was "what kind of trouble have those girls been up to?"

But that thought was swiftly replaced with overwhelming anxiety and shock.

The father of Mercedes McLean, the sole survivor of Thursday's fatal accident near Yeppoon where sisters Jessica, 15, and Rheanna Schobbe,12, died, described the harrowing moments when he first heard of the tragedy.

"I didn't answer my phone, so the police rang my wife Beth. She rang me and was hysterical, and I thought the girls may have been up to trouble, but that went out the window fast," the 4RO talkback show host said.

"At that stage we didn't know the situation of Jess and Rheanna and all we knew about Mercedes was that she had pain on the spine, I was freaking out she was paralysed," Mr McLean said.

Mr McLean said when he and his wife arrived at Rockhampton Hospital to see Mercedes, she was covered in dirt and had cuts everywhere.

"They had cut her clothes off her and handed them to Beth who was horrified and said to get rid of them - she has lacerations all over her body, bruising, a slightly punctured lung, a fractured pelvis, and a broken ankle in cast which is the main thing giving her grief."

After five nights in hospital, Mercedes was able to move around on crutches and with a walker, and was due to be released yesterday.

She would return to her home at Yeppoon to continue her recovery.

Before leaving the hospital The Morning Bulletin spoke briefly to the 13-year-old, who was best friends with Rheanna Schobbe.

"I've been sad a lot. We were really good mates and went to primary school and Yeppoon State High School together. We were in the same art class at school and would catch up at lunch and after school," Mercedes said.

The best friends mainly just chilled and hung out together, and loved to take photos - mainly selfies, Mercedes added.

Mercedes would stay at the Schobbe's home often, and got on well with the family. "Rheanna was more like a sister and Jess was a good friend. There's a lot of things I will miss," she said.
