WESTERN Spirit's promotion push is gaining momentum after they upstaged the team above them over the weekend.

Fourth-placed Spirit beat third-placed opponents Oxley United 3-1 at Kippen Park to keep within striking distance of the top two.

Capital League 2 competition neighbours Ipswich City also scored an encouraging 5-1 away victory over The Gap.

The Bulls are trying to stay clear of the opposite end of the table.

With both clubs also winning in Reserve grade, Spirit and City are looking stronger for their football campaigns after having this weekend off competition.

The latest victories by Spirit and the Bulls came after the Ipswich Knights also won an important game on Friday night.

The Knights beat UQ 4-2 in their Brisbane Premier League encounter at St Lucia.

With a catch-up match against Capalaba next weekend, the Knights can again challenge for a top six spot this season.
