314 caught speeding in first week of Legacy Way's opening

POLICE are urging motorists not to exceed the speed limit in the Legacy Way tunnel after 314 speeding drivers were issued infringements in the first week of the tunnel's operation.

With three fixed speed cameras in each direction, some vehicles were being detected on multiple occasions for exceeding the limit.

Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said police were concerned with the speeds some drivers were travelling at in the tunnel.

"While we know speeding is dangerous on any road, it is particularly alarming to see it occurring in a confined environment such as a tunnel," Acting Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

"It is particularly important that drivers obey all signage in the tunnel including the speed limits to ensure the traffic management plans work effectively to maintain a safe environment for all drivers.

"Every time you exceed the speed limit you are increasing the risk of you, your passengers and other road users of being involved in a traffic crash which could result in serious injury or death.

"Drivers are reminded they must not exceed the displayed speed on the electronic speed signs or the default speed limit signs should the electronic signs be blank. Drivers should not be pre-empting any speed tolerance given to drivers," he said.

"There is ample amount of speed limit signage throughout the tunnel and we are warning drivers to stick to the posted speed limit or face the real likelihood of receiving a fine in the mail."
