100 more Federal Police sent to secure MH17 crash site

ANOTHER 100 Australian Federal Police have been set to help secure the MH17, accompanied by unknown numbers of military officers, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday.

Despite preparing to send police and military troops into disputed rebel-held Ukrainian territory, Mr Abbott said he did not want to get involved in the "internal politics" of Ukraine.

He labelled the operation a "humanitarian mission" to bring home the 37 Australians killed in the MH17 crash, which claimed the lives of 298 people.

Mr Abbott said he had secured an agreement with the Ukrainian Government to send the Australians in, and expected one soon with the Dutch, who will lead any investigations.

However, he again did not clarify which other countries, if any, had provided Australia with assurances they will join what Mr Abbott has called an "international force" to secure the crash site.

AFP Commissioner Tony Negus would also not clarify how many police would be armed, saying only "some" would be armed.

Similarly, neither Mr Negus nor Mr Abbott would confirm exactly how many military staff were being prepared for deployment to the zone.
