THE theft of more than $8000 worth of gold from an Ipswich jeweller has police trolling through surveillance footage.

Management of the Pascoe Jewellery store at Riverlink Shopping Centre confirmed that five, nine-carat gold chains went missing between 2 and 4pm on Tuesday.

The chains were kept in an unlocked cabinet and it is suspected the thief reached across the counter to make the grab - although police were this week still investigating exactly how the incident played out.

Even though the store was open for business at the time, police were unable to pass on a description of a possible suspect.

Karana Downs division Sergeant Steve Andrews said police were looking at CCTV footage from nearby businesses inside the Riverlink centre.

It was hoped that police may be able to identify the offender from a number of security tapes in the area.

"We are in the process of going through that footage," Sgt Andrews said.

"It looks as though the theft has occurred between 2pm and 4pm, so it will take some time to go through.

"We are looking at it with a view to determining who the suspect may or may not be.

"Police are also attempting to locate witnesses," Sgt Andrews said.

Police said the chains were worth a total of $8064.
