Origin hero's son makes his mark

Ipswich Grammar School captain Alec Teevan has excelled at his schooling with support from his father, former State of Origin league representative Craig Teevan.

HE MAY be the son of a Queensland State of Origin hero but Alec Teevan isn't standing in the shadow of his famous footballing father.

Alec will have plenty of opportunity to work on his leadership skills at Ipswich Grammar School this year after being named as the schools 149th school captain.

The 16-year-old, who was born in the same year his father was part of arguably Queensland's best State of Origin series victory, in 1995, said he was thrilled to be given the leadership role.

"It's a huge honour," Alec said.

"I think being given this role is a culmination of all the help I've had from my parents, teachers and sporting coaches."

The talented junior track athlete has excelled at the school both in and out of the classroom since arriving in Year 8.

As a Year 10 student in 2010, Alec initiated a "Think Pink" week at the school in honour of inspiration teacher and athletics coach Peta Green who passed away from cancer.

Father Craig described the honour as "life changing" for his eldest son.

"To be school captain of a GPS school is a great achievement. We've always tried to instil a strong work ethic in the kids and Alec has worked extremely hard to get here."
