Crash driver ran 'to phone police'

Tags: crime, disqualified driver, drink driving, ipswich magistrates court, police

A DRUNK driver who crashed his car and fled has told an Ipswich court the reason he ran away was because he wanted to get home and phone police to confess what had happened.

Jeffrey Alan Schumacher, 29, had the accident at 1.50am on December 18 at Warwick Rd, Ipswich, and by the time police got there he had decamped.

Ipswich Magistrates Court was told Schumacher was located at a Flinders View house at 3.40am, where he admitted to police he had been the driver of the car.

He was breath tested and blew 0.170 - more than three times the legal limit - about two hours after the incident happened.

Schumacher told the court the only reason he left the vehicle was to get home so he could call the police to tell them he had been drink driving.

He said since he had his children four years ago he had been keeping out of trouble until that night.

Schumacher pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and driving under the influence of liquor.

He was fined $950 and disqualified from driving for eight months.
