IPSWICH'S roller derby league is seeking men and women eager to join in the full-contact skating sport.

The local league, Brisbane City Rollers, is accepting new skaters for the first time in six months.

Derby matches involve two teams racing around a flat track on quad roller skates to score points, and matches are held locally at the Ipswich Showgrounds.

Interested people can attend the first recruitment session, known in roller derby circles as "fresh meat intake", next Sunday, January 15 at the Showgrounds.

The "fresh meat" program runs for several weeks and covers learning and refining basic skating and safety skills.

All are welcome to attend the program, which is open to non-skaters and includes learning to skate.

Brisbane City Rollers is a co-ed league and accepts both male and female skaters.

Training costs $12 a session and you must have your own quad skates - not roller blades - and protective gear.

Pads are available for hire.
