Don't let the tie die

THE tie - once a staple of any man’s wardrobe - seems to have been increasingly demoted to the rag pile as the dressed-down look gains popularity.

WHAT was once a staple of any man’s wardrobe seems to have been increasingly demoted to the rag pile as the dressed-down look gains popularity.

It’s not just the fashion conscious that have ditched the tie in a bid to be more comfortable and look less authoritarian in the workplace – politicians, big businessmen and news readers have been among the hoards to follow suit.

But local clothing designer Amy Winks has warned blokes not to completely abandon the traditional tie as it still the best way to impress – provided it is worn with style.

“It’s a time and place thing,” Ms Winks said.

“I still think that if you’re going out for dinner, to a wedding or a christening, that you should wear a tie.

“From a woman’s perspective – if a guy is in a tie he is already way ahead of the competition.”

Local businessman Clinton Sippel said he always felt he could make a good first impression in a good old-fashioned tie and suit.

“I am usually the kind of person to just go with the moment – but when it comes to work I think you always look more professional with a tie on,” he said.

The wearing of a tie can take on a more political significance when you are the State Member of Parliament for a seat that spans both city and country.

Ipswich West MP Wayne Wendt said he generally went without one – except for formal occasions and in parliament house.

“Although I believe that the majority of people don’t care what I wear as long as I’m doing my job properly,” Mr Wendt said.

“I think the last thing you want to appear is out of touch with the people you represent.”

The former accountant admitted to feeling “a lot more comfortable” and at home with his electorate in a shirt and trousers.

“I don’t believe a tie is appropriate unless it is for a formal function. The same goes for the suit coat,” he said.

“I don’t think I have ever received a complaint about not wearing a tie – women unfortunately still seem to be far more susceptible to criticism due to their dress sense.”
