DOCTOR Phillip Bushell-Guthrie has been a plastic surgeon for more than 30 years and says while Mackay is “pretty macho”, men were coming through his clinic door opting for a cosmetic fix.
Dr Bushell-Guthrie is one of many practitioners who are recording a significant jump in the number of men wanting cosmetic surgery.
“There’s certainly more botox and filler injections being done by men – there’s not a lot of men getting facelifts but they’re more likely to have laser surgery and reducing redness,” Dr Bushell-Guthrie said.
He also sees men in their 50s and older who want upper eyelid lifts.
“It’s the over 50s where you see the skin rests on their eyelashes and blocks their vision which can interfere with their driving,” Dr Bushell-Guthrie said.
Footballers are also regular clients, undergoing rhinoplasty to fix their noses after an injury on the field as well as men of all ages to fix their prominent ears, known as otoplasty.
“It’s quite acceptable now. It used to be men not wanting to have a haircut at the ladies’ hairdressers, nowadays all those barriers seem to have broken down,” Dr Bushell-Guthrie said.
“In the old days miners were big, strong, thick and shovel guys but they don’t exist anymore; now they just have to be bright and be able to operate machinery.”
