Volunteers need cleaning equipment

VOLUNTEERS helping the Lockyer Valley community clean up after devastating flash floods wreaked havoc in the region have issued a plea for donations of cleaning equipment.

Grantham Flood Support volunteer James Deck said the community had received hundreds of donations of clothing, toiletries and furniture, but essential cleaning equipment was needed to clean the homes of mud and silt.

He said there was an urgent need for cleaning items including brooms, mops, buckets, scrubbing brushes, bleach, disinfectant, disposable face masks, toilet brushes, hand tools and garden tools. Gumboots and batteries were also needed.

Grantham residents were allowed to return to their homes for the first time last Tuesday to survey the damage sustained to their homes during the January 10 flash flood.

Debris was strewn throughout their homes, for those who were lucky enough to return to one, with mud caked inches thick in every room in their homes.

Donations can be dropped at the Old Pavilion at the Gatton Sports Centre at 136 Spencer Street, Gatton.

The centre is open seven days between 8am and 5pm.
