Biker has costly run from police

A REFRIGERATION mechanic has copped a $1000 fine for speeding away from police on a motorbike after having a few drinks at the pub.

Police clocked John Anthony Ahlers speeding at 75kmh in a 60kmh zone at Bellbird Park and motioned for him to pull over.

Ipswich Magistrates Court was told Ahlers accelerated away but quickly became stuck behind heavy traffic and was intercepted.

The bike was unregistered and uninsured, its plates were cancelled and Ahlers only held a learner's permit at the time.

Ahlers, 31, returned a positive alcohol reading by the roadside but failed to provide a breath specimen at the station despite being given three opportunities.

He pleaded guilty to failing to supply, speeding, driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle displaying cancelled plates and driving unlicensed.

Ahlers was fined $1000 and his licence was disqualified for nine months.

Defence lawyer Jon Kent said his client had a couple of drinks at the local hotel over a few hours and had panicked when asked for a breath sample.

“He's got no real explanation other than he was extremely nervous at the time and didn't follow the directions properly,” Mr Kent said.

Mr Kent said Ahlers initially did not see police but pulled over once he noticed they were following him.
