Marburg needs committee to pad up

MARBURG Cricket Club was unable to elect a president or treasurer at its annual general meeting (AGM) a fortnight ago but that should be remedied this weekend, according to club secretary Bob Lutherborrow.

At the AGM on July 25, the president and treasurer and some committee positions remained unfilled so the meeting will continue at the Marburg Showgrounds on Sunday at 10am.

Positions that were filled on July 25 were vice-president (Trevor Walters) and secretary (Lutherborrow).

Both 2009-10 president Tommy Douglas and his predecessor in the role Rino Nugter attended the AGM but did not nominate for positions.

Lutherborrow remains confident that come Sunday the club will have a full committee in place.

“There was some uncertainty around the club over who was nominating for what position,” he said. “Now it is a bit clearer.

“There has been an indication of support from various areas.

“Some previous office bearers of high standing and some coming through the junior ranks.

“In a sense it was disappointing we didn't fill the positions first time round but in another sense it is encouraging that some new blood is likely to come forward.”

Lutherborrow is confident player numbers will be strong despite the loss of Sam Truloff to Brisbane club Wests and David Lyons, who has moved to the South Burnett for work.

Daniel Green is weighing up retirement while Lutherborrow's son Doug is also contemplating a move to Brisbane.

Should he go, Lutherborrow senior will likely relinquish his role as club secretary but believes the club is set for a good season on and off the pitch.

“We should be just as strong as last year,” he said of the Mustangs' playing roster for this coming summer.

“We believe we are getting a former Brisbane Wests first grader and one or two other fairly high profile ex-Ipswich players who have been playing in Brisbane and have expressed some interest.

“Of course that is still a long way from signing them up.

“On the whole, we may not be quite as strong as last year but then we may not be far different.”
