Thick fog shrouded the Ipswich CBD on Friday morning.

HEAVY fog is expected to ease tomorrow as south-westerly winds move across Ipswich today.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Bryan Rolstone said today’s maximum was expected to be 27 degrees, six above average, after an overnight low of 12.

“The fog was a result of moisture building up over the past couple of days,” he said.

“There was too much moisture for the atmosphere so it condensed overnight and evaporated during the day.

“It’s a cycle that continues until you get a bit of dry air moving across the region.

“At the moment the air temperature is 24 and the dew point is 16. When they coincide you get fog. It usually happens in the early hours of the morning, usually around 4am.”

Mr Rolstone said tomorrow morning should be free from fog.

“The south-westerly wind will end the fog, but the minimum temperature over the next few days will go down,” he said.

“We’ll go back to those chilly mornings and have some warm days.

“There will be a bit of wind around the place and it should stay dry.”

South-East Queensland was blanketed in fog yesterday, suspending ferries and disrupting flights at Brisbane Airport. Visibility was down to less to 200 metres in some areas.

Brisbane Airport spokeswoman Rebecca McConochie said the airport was thrown into chaos about 7.30am.

“Some planes are being diverted to other airports or are circling,” she said yesterday.

“It’s very restricted. For safety reasons we cannot be taking off or landing blind.”
