Woeful Jets look for new era

THERE were no big hits to be seen from players wearing green at North Ipswich Reserve in what shapes as Glenn Lazarus's last match as Ipswich Jets head coach.

THERE were no big hits or super-charged runs to be seen from players wearing green at North Ipswich Reserve yesterday in what shapes as Glenn Lazarus’s last match as Ipswich Jets head coach.

The Ipswich Jets put in a performance devoid of intensity against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and were consequently thumped 38-6 in a match no one would enjoy watching a replay of.

Thankfully for Jets’ fans, a new era is poised to dawn on the club with Lazarus expected to be dumped at the Jets’ board meeting tomorrow.

Dan Coburn and Ian Lacey were the two standout players for the Jets with Coburn having one of his best games of the year.

But with all hopes of a finals berth evaporated, there was no passion in the Jets’ performance.

The Seagulls stretched out to a 16-point lead inside 20 minutes and the contest was effectively over.

They continued to score at will and lead 26-0 at halftime.

It was certainly not the impression Lazarus wanted to leave ahead of tomorrow night’s board meeting.

Meanwhile, the Jets Colts team put in a much more spirited performance, almost pulling off a miraculous victory.

The Colts came from well behind to level the scores at 30-all with nine minutes remaining.

But they eventually lost as Wynnum Manly scored two quick tries to win the match 40-30.

It was an entertaining game filled with sizzling tries and a brawl which ended in four players being sin-binned.

Colts coach Mark Bishop said the referees overreacted to the brawl.

“The players did rush in for it but no damage was really done,” Bishop said.

“Our players were frustrated at their performance at that point and that’s how they took it out.”

Bishop said the loss would be a timely wake-up call to his team who have now dropped to fifth on the ladder.

“I think this loss could be a good thing as it will make them realise that you can’t show up and put in a performance like that and expect to win,” Bishop said.

“But to be honest, I don’t think we deserved to win that game.”

Queensland Cup: Wynnum Manly Seagulls 38 (Sam Teo 2, Vincent Silulu 2, David Seage, Jack Afamasaga, Jon Grieve tries; Matt Seamark 4, Damien Quinn) def Ipswich Jets 6 (Tyson Lofipo tries; Brendon Marshall goal) at North Ipswich Reserve.

FOGS Colts: Wynnum Manly Seagulls 40 (Luke Ferry 2, Jack Belford, Brock Davies, Keda Moylan, James Hanley, Casey Rogers tries; Daniel Dewhurst 5, Keda Moylan goals) def Ipswich Jets 30 (Chris Naidu 3, Eric Alefosio, David Faamita, Brodie Cochrane tries; Chris Naidu 2, Eric Alefosio goals).
